Unless you have been consistently following a disciplined approach to diet and exercise, the only plateau you have reached is INCONSISTENCY! Get your ASS in gear, eat strictly and exercise daily or almost daily.
On the other hand, if you have been consistent and suddenly you reach a plateau, send me $75.00 via paypal and I will help you along....just kidding! Hint, hint though!
Seriously, if you have been following a limited carb (NOT no carb, but limited to low glycemic carbs and very limited starchy carbs) diet and exercising consistently and are now hittign a plateau, you need to "refresh" your internal mechanisms, that is re-set and jump start that metabolism of yours. How do you do that?
Here are two suggestions, first increase your cardio to twice per day, five days per week, that is 10 sessions per week. Wake up earlier than normal in the morning, have a cup of black tea (caffeinated!) or a strong cup of joe (my personal preference, Yuban Columbian coffee, I drink it black as the ace of spades!). Allow yourself 15 min. for the caffeine to take full effect and then hop on a piece of cardiovascular equipment (I prefer the stationary bike or eliptical machine) and exercise for exactly 40 minutes (5 min. warmup, 30 min. in the "zone" and 5 min. of cool down).
In the evening perform your normal resistance (weight training) workout and finish up with another 20-30 min. of cardio. A side benefit of the evening workout (as long as its not too close to bedtime) is that if relaxes your and helps you fall asleep faster.
The other suggestion I have is to trick your body by adding a high carb meal every 5-6 days. After 5-6 days of consistent, healthy eating, enjoy yourself and have some garlic mashed potatos or enjoy a slice of cake (I love plain 'ol NY style cheesecake!).....or have that hunk of bread you have been craving, dipped in oil oil and herbs. Hell, a bowl of pasta alfredo is fine, but limit this to just ONE MEAL, not all day! My usual cheat day or planned cheat meal is Friday evening. After a long week my wife and I indulge ourselves in Italian Cuisine, red wine and finish off with some late evening love-making. It does a body good!!!
